Tyson and Serma produced a litter of 9 magnificent Karakachan puppies 9/28/2019. We are currently taking deposits on these puppies for mid-December, early January pick up dates. Call me (406-369-1145) or message me ([email protected]) or find us on Facebook (Farmstead Hollow). I'd love to talk to you about these available "guardians in training" and see if we have a puppy that is right for you and your farm/ranch/family.
Raising livestock in the middle of predator territory is a tricky business indeed. Our admiration for the mountain lions, bears, coyotes , skunks and birds of prey who traverse our property is immense, to be sure. However, we cannot have them feasting on our barnyard animals. Through trial and some error... we have arrived at the solution of Livestock Guardian Dogs. Our two beloved Karakachan LGDs, Tyson and Serma, watch over our critters 24/7; taking extraordinary care of their charges. We truly could not do this farming thing without these two majestic sentinels on duty.
Serma - our brown and white female - LOVES people and rarely passes up a chance to greet newcomers, which is a somewhat rare personality trait for this breed of dog, but one that works out great for our little 5 acre family friendly farm, where her need for human interaction is met, along with her equally intense need to have animals to protect. Don't let her sweet face fool you; if Serma hears or smells anything that hints at a threat to her livestock, she flips that guardian switch on and shows her fierce side. She could not be a more perfect fit for Farmstead Hollow.
Chances are good that visitors to our farm will go their entire time here without seeing our big black male, Tyson. But have no doubt that he sees them. Tyson is more traditional of the Karakachan breed in that he is wary of strangers and far more concerned with his job than he is with socializing. He spends most of his daylight hours dozing in the Lilac trees where he can keep an eye on the vacation rental and monitor guests. Nighttime is Tyson's time to shine. Winter tracks in the snow tell us that this big fellow spends his nights patrolling the animal fields and stopping into each barn on a regular circuit to check for signs of trouble. With Tyson on duty, the Rocky Mountain wild predators make the decision that our barn animals are simply too much of a risk and keep their hunting activities to the other side of our fences. Exactly as it should be.
Serma and Tyson have produced two magnificent litters of Karakachan puppies, one litter of 8 in 2018 and one litter of 10 in 2019. These little "guardians in training" absolutely stole our hearts with their courageous little personalities and goofy puppy spirits. Their training began at day one, by whelping them in the barnyard surrounded by the livestock that they are expected to protect for the rest of their lives. They spent 10 to 16 weeks with their parents - learning invaluable lessons about how to care for the barnyard animals and drive off predators, before heading to their own ranches (in Canada, Colorado, Nebraska, Georgia, Montana, Washington, Oregon and Idaho). We are so proud of each and every one of them!
This breed LIVES to work, so early training in how to productively direct those instincts is vital. . If you think that you might be interested, please look up the breed first to make sure that you understand what to expect from this unique dog. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Megan 406-369-1145 Most of our puppies sell for $1,000.00, which includes microchips, vaccines, and deworming.
